Opening a Bank Account with Arion Bank

Opening a bank account with Arion Bank is very simple. The only requirement is that you have an Icelandic ID number (kennitala). If you don't already have an Icelandic ID number, you can apply for one at the Icelandic National Registry at skra.is.

Once you have your ID number, you can choose between two methods to open an account:

1. You can apply for a bank account using electronic identification

Start by downloading the Arion app. There you can easily establish a banking relationship using electronic identification. (To get electronic identification, you need an Icelandic ID number and your phone's SIM card must support electronic identification.)

Once you have electronic identification, it's easy to open a bank account, apply for a debit card, and use various other services in the app.

2. You can schedule an appointment and visit one of our branches

If you don't have electronic identification, or prefer not to use it, you can visit the nearest bank branch and establish your banking relationship there. We always welcome you! It's necessary to bring valid identification.

However, we strongly recommend getting electronic identification as it facilitates access to various services in Icelandic society.
