Welcome to Iceland!

Moving to a new country can feel overwhelming. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you settle in.

Reykjavík - Esja

First things first

1

Get an ID number (kennitala)

Citizens of EEA/EFTA countries apply for a national ID number through Registers Iceland.

Others either apply through Registers Iceland or the Directorate of Immigration, depending on their circumstances.

2

Register an address

You must register your move to Iceland at Registers Iceland in Reykjavík or at your nearest police station.

Please bring valid identification and attend in person to complete the registration.

3

Get a phone number

Having an Icelandic phone number can make everyday life easier.

Several telecom providers operate in Iceland, offering a variety of plans and services.

4

Activate electronic ID

Once you have obtained an Icelandic ID number (kennitala), you can apply for an electronic ID.

Stop by, and we'll assist you. Be sure to bring your passport or a residence permit card issued by the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration.

5

Get the Arion app

Once your electronic ID is active, you can download the Arion app.

From there, you can easily manage your finances in one place.
