Foreign currency payments in Arion Online Banking - required information

Foreign currency payments are made in Arion Online Banking. The following information about the recipient is required:

  • Full name of recipient
  • Address of recipient
  • Correspondent bank - SWIFT address of the foreign bank or its branch number
  • IBAN number if applicable (European account number) / account number
  • Reason for payment (in English)

SWIFT bank codes have 8 to 11 digits. For example SWIFT Deutsche Bank in Erlangen is “DEUTDEMM763” and SWIFT Den Danske Bank in Copenhagen is “DABADKKKXXX”.

Branch numbers vary between countries. British banks use SC (Sort Code) and six digit numbers, German banks use BLZ and 8 digit number and US banks use ABA and 9 digit numbers (sometimes called FW or ROUTING number).

Arion Bank sends payment instructions to the correspondent bank abroad which then deposits the payment into the account of the recipient or sends to payment on to the recipient’s bank.

Payments are received in 2-5 days

Generally the payment reaches the account of the recipient two working days after the payment instructions are sent (value date).

In exceptional cases the payment can take up to 5 working days to reach the recipient. Payment can be accelerated by 1 day for an additional charge.

Opening time for international transactions and transfers

Opening time for international transactions and transfers is as follows:

  • Open from 9:15 - 16:00 on week days if withdrawing from an Icelandic krónur account.
  • Open from 8:00 - 20:45 on week days if withdrawing from a foreign currency account.
